The Axed Lesbian Kiss on Law & Order
March 8, 2010
On Wednesday, Kathy Griffin made her highly anticipated first appearance on NBC’s Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Griffing played a lesbian activist who’s focus was on capturing the person who was killing and attacking lesbians in the neighborhood. This was definitely a good episode, one that caught my attention due to the relevance of the case. However, this episode made its rounds through the media for another reason.
There was a scene where Griffin made an attempt to give Detective Benson, played by Mariska Hargitay, a kiss on the lips, but Benson moved away and clearly identified herself as a heterosexual woman. When watching it, the scene wasn’t such a big deal to me. Benson stepped away and avoided the kiss. But, I later learned that there was an on-screen kiss between the two, which was tossed. Below is the scene that was axed.
Despite the talk of this one particular scene, this episode really touched on a lot of topics involving the LGBT community; such as discrimination, same-sex domestic violence, rape, self-identity and acceptance. If you missed this episode, I highly encourage you all to check your local listings for a rerun.
Do you think the scene should have been aired? Would the scene influence society’s perception of lesbians?
Tool Academy – Is This The Answer?
February 17, 2010
Tool Academy is back for another season. And this time, they are going co-ed! The Tool Academy is a program/reality show on Vh1 that is designed to transform the worst boyfriend, into a knight in shining armor. This season is the first where females are enrolled and are just as “toolish” as their male counterparts. These tools lie, cheat, and treat their partners like doormats; which is something I like to call “mental abuse”.
We’re not big fans of reality shows, but I do keep an eye on them just to stay abreast of society changes. My concern was the fact that there was a lesbian couple on the show. This can easily be seen as a way to expose people to the lesbian lifestyle – if there is such a thing – and show that homosexual relationships are no different than heterosexual relationships. However, my gut is telling me that even though many are involved in abusive heterosexual relationships, the homosexual couple will be outcasted as being a problem, when really, the problem is not the gender, but incompatibility.
What do you think? Is a reality show that is meant to be entertaining the answer to mental abuse for any kind of relationship?
Are serious issues concerning individuals starting to become a really big joke?
Or the fact that they are on the show to get help for their abusive ways is an underlying message that if you’re the abuser or the abused, get help?
Sound off!
Monogamy/Infidelity in the LGBT Community
February 3, 2010
The women of The View are at it again. This time, monogamy and infidelity amongst the gays and lesbians are the topic of discussion. Joy Behar feels that gays and lesbians treat infidelity differently than straights. She believes that gays will continue a relationship with someone who has not been faithful, whereas straight people will end the relationship. She needs to check out the Real Love section to see how we value monogamy around here.
Do gays/lesbians view monogamy and infidelity different than straight people? Let us know what you think by leaving a comment below.
A Family is a Family is a Family on HBO
January 21, 2010
Rosie O’Donnell has a show that will be premiering on January 31 on HBO called A Family is a Family is a Family. The show is a documentary of kids stating what a family means to them. There will be kids featured who have two fathers, two mothers, and those who were adopted by an American heterosexual couple. The show will also include commentary by Rosie and her children.
Keep in mind that this is not the first time Rosie has given back to the LGBT community in motivating and inspiring ways. She and her now former partner, Kelli, founded R Family Vacations that hosts cruises and vacation packages for LGBT families.
It is hard to find LGBT families who are giving back to the community, especially in Hollywood. With media speculation on one’s sexual orientation, many are faced with the dilemma of coming out and what effect it may have on their careers. Rosie has always been an outspoken and obnoxious person, but you can’t deny the fact that she has found her niche that not only benefits her own family, but many others as well.
Because of this show and Rosie’s commitment towards empowering LGBT families, it’s appearing that Rosie has gained another supporter.
Will you be watching the show?
Have you ever been on a vacation through R Family? We’d love to hear about your experience.

I finally saw Michael Jackson’s This Is It yesterday morning. OH MY GOD!!! I was blown away seeing this man doing what he does best. This is definitely a must see for those who can truly appreciate his work, despite the negative press he’s received throughout his career. [Read more]
